How does component substitution impact on PBS Vehicle Performance?
Of the sixteen vehicle performance and four infrastructure standards, there are a subset of standards that are the critical ones in finalising a PBS design.
These critical standards are often reliant on the performance characteristics of key components such as tyres, suspension and brakes. Increasingly, in the future, substitution of sensors and electronic components will also become important.
Substitution of tyres within PBS designs has been a controversial issue for some time. However, in addressing this issue we need to consider component substitution more broadly.
Having reliable data on the performance of these components is critical to the assessment of the vehicles performance and substitution of these components within a design can be critical as to whether a re-assessment of the design is required.
As an industry we need to talk to offer regulators solutions to address these issues, or it will be addressed for us and we might not like the outcomes.
